Hockey coach Harendra resigns after Malaysia debacle

GUANGZHOU/NEW DELHI: Indian men's hockey team national coach Harendra Singh on Tuesday resigned from his post after his side crashed out of the Asian Games with a 3-4 defeat by Malaysia in the second semifinal in Guangzhou, China.

India's hopes of a gold medal and a direct berth in the 2012 London Olympics were dashed by a spirited Malaysia, who rode on Muhammad Amin Rahim's 75th minute golden goal to progress to their maiden title clash, where they will meet seven-time champions Pakistan, on Thursday.

Soon after the unexpected loss, Harendra tendered his resignation to Hockey India secretary general Narinder Batra taking full responsibility of the team's disastrous showing in the semifinal.

"Keeping in view of the dismal performance of the men's hockey team in the semifinal match against Malaysia today, I hereby tender my resignation as the national coach of the men's hockey team with immediate effect," he wrote in his resignation letter to Batra.

"I accept the moral responsibility for the debacle at the 16the Asian Games," Harendra added.

In his resignation letter, he also thanked the HI and various government bodies apart from the players and his colleagues for their support during his association with the national team.

"I am grateful to Hockey India, Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of India and Sports Authority of India for all the support and encouragement I received during my tenure as a national coach.

"I am thankful to all the officials of the said organisations for giving me this wonderful opportunity to serve for the country. I would also convey my gratitude for the kind of unconditional support I received from my countrymen as well as well wishers form various countries during the said appointment," he wrote.

"I would also like to put on record the support I received from the members of the media. I would fail in my duty If I do not convey my sincere thanks to all my players and support staffs who stood by me in each and every occasion during this eventful tenure. I wish all the luck to the Indian men's hockey team for the future," Harendra signed off.

However, Batra said, in no way, the federation would accept Harendra's resignation at this crucial juncture and had asked him to continue with the job.

"I had received his mail and also talked with him over phone. I told him that it is not right to be emotional. We have a bronze medal match to play and I asked him to concentrate on that match," Batra said.

"It is good that he has taken moral responsibility but it is not the right time to take this step. All this can be sorted out after returning to India. I asked him to be with the team and work together so that we can return with the bronze medal," he added.

India continue to lead ICC Test rankings

DUBAI: India maintained their supremacy at the top of ICC rankings for Test teams after winning the three-Test series against New Zealand 1-0, while South Africa and Sri Lanka remained static on second and third position respectively.

However, the world number one India with 129 points, given their huge difference with the Kiwis (80) at the start of the series, lost one rating point despite the triumph.

On the other hand, the 0-1 verdict after draws in the first two Tests helped New Zealand earn two rating points and gain a place in the rankings chart, released after the completion of the three-match series.

Thanks to their fighting efforts in the first two Tests, New Zealand replaced West Indies from the seventh position.

India had entered the series leading eighth-placed New Zealand by 52 ratings points. This gap meant Mahendra Singh Dhoni's side was expected to win the series convincingly.

Meanwhile, the upcoming five-match Ashes series will give hosts Australia a chance to leapfrog England, placed fourth with 112 rating points.

A 1-0 or 3-2 series win will put Australia on 112 ratings points, leaving England on 109 points, while a 3-0 or 4-1 series win will lift Australia to 115 ratings points, with England on 107.

However, if England win the series they will not only retain the Ashes but also extend their advantage over the traditional rivals.

The much-anticipated series will also provide off-spinner Graeme Swann with an opportunity to become the first English bowler in over six years to top the ICC player rankings for Test bowlers.

Currently in second position, Swann trails South Africa spearhead Dale Steyn by just six ratings points. Steve Harmison was the last English bowler to top the rankings.

Clarke fit to play in Ashes opener, Bollinger cut

BRISBANE: Vice-captain Michael Clarke has recovered sufficiently from a back injury to play for Australia in the Ashes opener against England starting on Thursday at the Gabba.

"Just finished training and the back got through," Clarke wrote on his Twitter feed on Wednesday. "Wake up ok tomorrow and I'm in."

The middle-order batsman injured his back playing for New South Wales in Sheffield Shield cricket earlier this month and only returned to training on Tuesday.

But Clarke, who has not missed playing a Test match despite a history of chronic back trouble, satisfied team management that he was fit enough to play out the five days of the first Test in Brisbane.

Welcoming his deputy's all-clear, captain Ricky Ponting said that left-arm paceman Doug Bollinger had been left out and would be released along with Clarke's standby Usman Khawaja to play for NSW in Perth this weekend.

"Michael Clarke has got through his work particularly well over the last couple of days," Ponting said.

"He had a long solid bat in the nets again today (Wednesday), against the bowlers and the coach, so he's come through pretty well."

Ponting said Clarke had undergone rigorous drills to prove that his mobility had returned.

"Clarke has done all his fielding today, so I don't think there is any risk at all with him," he said.

"It's a big game for us to go into the start of a series and we're going in without any cloud hanging over anybody.

"That was why he was asked to do as much batting as he could yesterday and why he had done as much batting today.

"We couldn't afford to leave any stone unturned as far as his preparation was concerned or even testing him out doing different things, so he's done all the work he's been asked."

Mitchell Johnson, Ben Hilfenhaus and Peter Siddle will spearhead Australia's bowling attack in the first Test.

"Dougie (Bollinger) will be the unlucky quick to miss out," Ponting said.

"It's probably his lack of bowling over the last few weeks that has been as much to do with it.

"When this bowling attack was together last time it had good success in South Africa and at different times in England in the last series.

"So we feel that Hilfenhaus and Siddle are very much advanced in their preparation for this series and Johnson has got a lot of cricket under his belt as well.

"We feel this attack has enough to take us 20 wickets at the Gabba."

Australia - Simon Katich, Shane Watson, Ricky Ponting (captain), Michael Clarke (vice-captain), Mike Hussey, Marcus North, Brad Haddin, Mitchell Johnson, Xavier Doherty, Ben Hilfenhaus, Peter Siddle.
